Resources Available to Students

The school has some physical assets (i.e. class room space, training sites, books, computers, photocopiers, printers, audio visual equipment, fax machines and vehicles) to meet its responsibilities of training, research and service. However, it is of advantage for each student to have a personal computer of reasonable capacity to enable him/her acquire the relevant computer skills, for use during the study period and in order to execute public health activities.

Lecture Rooms
The school is housed in a four-storied building in the vicinity of the College of Health Sciences atop Mulago Hill. The greater compound is shared with Mulago National Referral Hospital complex. The school has four lecture rooms and four seminar rooms. In case of extensive microbiological, haematological, and other pathological investigations, facilities in the rest of the College of Health Sciences and National Referral Hospital are accessible by special arrangements.

Resource Center / Library
There is a modest resource centre located on the first floor of the building. Many works of MUSPH staff members and students are found here. There are resource files on a wide range of Public Health subjects available for reference.
The resource centre is open during weekdays from 8.00am to 5.00pm. It remains closed on public holidays and weekends.
The centre is stocked with books that can be borrowed for a specified number of days, while journals and dissertations are only available for reference and cannot be borrowed.
There is access to electronic data base systems (e.g. POPLINE, MEDLINE, etc.) in the resource centre and Data Management Centre. Other libraries with useful resource materials also exist within the Medical School and the University Main Campus. The Albert Cook Medical School library has access to the Internet MEDLINE services in addition to AIDSLINE and POPLINE and can aid in the exchange of information with Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio which can mail or fax copies of requested journals / articles. The Main library of the University is located on the main campus and it has physical literature and access to electronic data base systems. A number of faculties and departments have collections of literature, which is accessible through special arrangements.
Libraries in other research institutions like Child Health and Development Centre (CHDC) and the Makerere University Institute of Social Research (MISR) provide great sources of information that can be utilised.

Equipment
The Data Management Centre is located on Level 2 with desktop computers for use by both the students and staff. The school has fast and reliable internet connection, accessible to all students and staff in the faculty. The Data Management Centre, open during working hours is easily accessible, and supervised by competent and helpful personnel.

The MUSPH Resource center receives books from donors, like The Italian Cooperation, MUSPH-CDC Fellowship Program, Makerere University Book Bank and direct purchases by the school itself.
Books
The resource center has a variety of books divided into sections like reserve books, book bank books and books on open shelves. Reserve books are strictly accessed within because they are less than 5 copies. The book bank books and books on open shelves can be borrowed for a specified period of time.

Utilization of Resource Center Materials
To be able to access resource centre materials, readers must deposit their identity cards with the librarian. The Resource Center allows overnight borrowing and one weeks’ loan respectively, after which a reader can renew if he or she still needs the book.

Reports, Dissertations, Research proposals, Magazines/Newsletters, Bulletins and Journals cannot be taken out of the resource centre.
