Message from the Dean.

Dr. William Bazeyo, Dean Makerere University School of Public Health December 2009.

I wish to take this opportunity to ask us all staff of MUSPH to adopt the slogan 'I am A Contribution' meaning that each and every one of us faculty or support staff believe and aim everyday even on the mention of the School name to know and intentionally aim to bring a contribution which will in long or short run cause change. We do not strive to just cause change but indeed positive Change that will leave a trail that can be see when we are long time gone.

It is my goal as Dean to honor the rich history of this School and to move it forward to accomplish its mission. The vision of the school is to be a Centre of excellence in providing leadership in Public Health in the region and beyond
The vision rests on a commitment to sound academic quality; development of values-based leaders; development of an inclusive environment for School and community stakeholders; improved planning and reporting processes for accountability; increased enrollment through new well thought out demand driven programs and new approaches to fiscal soundness; increased commitment to the strong community outreach partnerships and collaborations; infusion of international perspectives throughout the School communication strategy; and development of an Institutional Advancement Division to create a marketing initiative for the School as well as the College as a whole.

First and foremost, a firm commitment to academic quality will ensure that the nation’s workforce possesses appropriate knowledge and skills that will contribute to progress for Uganda and the region (EAC). To this end, the School of Public Health will provide high-quality instructional, research, and service programs that are accessible to Ugandan citizens and East Africa as a whole. These programs will ensure the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary for productive, responsible and meaningful lives. I will at all times encourage faculty participation in research activities which are indeed viewed as a portion of the academic life of the university. In addition, MUSPH will seek ways to increase the number of faculty lines at the full professor and Associate Professor ranks and will endeavor to identify sources of funds for faculty development through our partnerships and collaborations.
The commitment to develop values-based leaders is an important one. It is critical that we teach values by example and by precept. Leadership for the 21st century must be purposeful, high-minded, discerning and analytical, but above all else, leaders must be values-based.
A commitment to teamwork through the establishment of an inclusive environment is vital. School and community stakeholders must understand the vision, commit to the School's mission, engage in activities that contribute to the realization of the strategic plan, and use outcomes to inform the change process.

The School will commit to new collaborations and partnerships to provide innovative technologies and teaching strategies to the academic programs. These collaborations will provide opportunities for student practicum and field experiences, faculty exchanges and retooling initiatives, and facility upgrade. Collaborations will be internal as well as external with other Schools of Public Health, Universities, corporations, and governmental agencies.

The School has made great strides in the past and is currently encouraged by enrollment growth. Recognized for its highly demanded MPH programs Full time and DE of which the later is the only Graduate DE program in Makerere University, MUSPH boasts of an impressive faculty that has significant potential for growth and potential growth in its physical facilities. Further, MUSPH is among the leading University institutions/faculties in the System in funds received from sponsored research and grants per FTE faculty.

It is my sincere hope and wish that we, in our time of service will cause an impact on the lives of our people by both training young and energetic Ugandans that will go back with determination not only to face the emerging and re-emerging diseases but who will strive to prevent their occurrence.

Finally, my commitment to MUSPH as Dean is to make this historic School, with its rich heritage, a vital part of the Makerere University College of Health Sciences community, graduating students who will be engaged citizens regardless of where they serve.

I urge my colleagues at the School that; Let us never be judged by history. I end by saying and believing that Our role in this World as professionals is to Seek God, Study the World and finally to Serve Humanity.
