With funding from the Ugandan Academy of Health Innovation and Impact, Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is implementing the 3TC/TDF PrEP Adherence Study, which will evaluate the uptake, adherence and effectiveness of 3TC/TDF pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as a bridge to antiretroviral therapy in HIV serodiscordant couples.

The study is being conducted by the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The department seeks suitable persons to fill the following positions. Successful candidates will be hired on a contract basis.

 

Position: Clinical Officer/Study Coordinator

Reports to: Principal Investigator

Job description:

  • Overall coordination of various study functions including recruitment and retention, clinic, pharmacy, data management, and the clinic-laboratory interface.
  • Assists investigators with implementation of the study protocol, planning and problem-solving.
  • Leads the clinical team in implementing study procedures, performs clinical examinations, prescribes medications and makes referrals to other agencies for acute medical conditions not covered by this research study.
  • Supervises staff and ensures that they achieve the aims and objectives of the study as indicated in the protocol.
  • Completes case review forms, source documents and ensures integrity of study data through QA/QC activities/procedures.
  • Ensures participants receive appropriate care, medical evaluations and alerts the PIs and sponsors of any serious adverse events.
  • Coordinates contractual arrangements between the study and collaborating partners e.g. outside labs and HIV care organizations. Oversight of community outreach activities and liaison with Community Advisory Board.
  • Ensures timely IRB submissions and correspondence.
  • Submits progress and performance reports to Principal Investigators and sponsors.
  • Contributes to the writing of scientific articles.

 

Qualifications and required skills:

-        Diploma in clinical medicine.

-        Valid practice licence.

-        Experience with HIV treatment and prevention.

-        At least 2 years of PrEP clinical trial experience.

-        Experience with counseling HIV serodiscordant couples.

-        Possession of a certificate in good clinical practice/human subjects protection is a key added advantage.

 

Position: Administrator

Reports to: Principal Investigator

Job description:

  • General office administration.
  • Human resource management.
  • Provides proper audit trail for study funds and expenditures.
  • Management of study logistics & facilities.
  • Coordinates communications with regulatory bodies (IRB, UNCST, NDA, MOH etc.).
  • Coordinates the development and maintenance of project contracts and MOUs.
  • Coordinates project communication: meetings, minutes, email etc.
  • Acts as the main administrative interface with the sponsor and funder.
  • Supervision of study support staff.

 

Qualifications and required skills:

-        Bachelor’s degree in health sciences or humanities.

-        At least 2 years of clinical trials experience.

-        Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.

-        Prior experience working with research regulatory requirements including communications/interactions with regulatory bodies (IRB, UNCST, NDA, and MOH).

-        Excellent communication skills and fluency in English and Luganda.

-        Possession of a certificate in good clinical practice/human subjects protection is a key added advantage.

Position: Nurse Counselor/Clinic Manager

Reports to: Principal Investigator

Job description:

  • Plans and organizes day to day running of the study clinic.
  • Oversight of counseling, informed consent, clinic procedures and collection of study specimens.
  • Participates in maintaining records, making reports, providing support services to the study participants.
  • Ensures availability of clinic supplies/stores.
  • Performs QA/QC to ensure completeness of source documents and integrity of study data.
  • Performs other activities as may be assigned from time to time.

 

Qualifications and required skills:

-        Registered nurse or midwife.

-        Valid general practice licence from Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.

-        At least 2 years of PrEP clinical trial experience.

-        Experience with counseling of HIV serodiscordant couples.

-        Excellent communication skills and fluency in English and Luganda.

-        Possession of a certificate in good clinical practice/human subjects protection is a key added advantage.

 

Position: Community Outreach Manager/Nurse Counselor

Reports to: Principal Investigator

Job description:

  • Organizes and implement study recruitment & retention activities.
  • Field mobilization of study participants.
  • Coordinate recruitment of study participants with collaborating partner organizations.
  • Develop study related information, communication and education (IEC) materials.
  • Participate in study clinic activities including counseling and other activities as needed. 
  • Conduct participant home visits to enhance recruitment & retention.
  • Flexibility working after hours and on weekends.
  • Responsible for other activities as may be assigned from time to time

 

Qualifications and required skills:

-        Registered nurse or midwife.

-        Valid general practice licence from Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.

-        At least 2 years of PrEP clinical trial experience, particularly recruitment and retention of HIV serodiscordant couples.

-        Excellent communication skills and fluency in English and Luganda.

-        Experience with counseling of HIV serodiscordant couples.

-        Ability to productively work with multiple referral partners

-        Possession of a certificate in good clinical practice/human subjects protection is a key added advantage.

-        Valid driving permit code A (licenced to ride a motorcycle).

 

Position:  Data Manager

Reports to:  Principal Investigator

Job description:

  • Design, implement and maintain study data bases and back-up/recovery systems.
  • Transmit study data by email, data fax or any other appropriate or prescribed method.
  • Ensure data integrity by coordinating QA/QC.
  • Maintain IT equipment and data archives.
  • Generate reports.
  • Perform other activities as may be assigned from time to time.

 

Qualifications and required skills:

-        BSc in computer science or information technology.

-        At least 2 years of PrEP clinical trial experience.

-        Familiarity with data collection using REDCap.

-        Experience with longitudinal database management.

-        Data quality assurance and quality control for longitudinal studies.

-        Design and manage participant tracking and scheduling systems.

-        Digital files storage/archiving.

-        Systems and equipment maintenance.

-        Possession of a certificate in good clinical practice/human subjects protection is a key added advantage.

 

Position:  Receptionist/Study Courier

Reports to: Administrator

Job description:

  • Manage the front desk/reception.
  • Assist study participants navigate the clinic.
  • Retrieval of study documents.
  • Assist with participant recruitment and retention
  • Scheduling of study visit dates.
  • Participant reimbursement.
  • Specimen transport to laboratories at Makerere and delivery of laboratory results to clinic.
  • Participate in other activities as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications and required skills:

-        Good customer care skills.

-        Excellent communication skills and fluency in English and Luganda.

-        Familiarity with computerized participant scheduling systems.

-        Valid driving permit code A (licenced to ride a motorcycle).

-        Possession of a certificate in good clinical practice/human subjects protection is a key added advantage.

 

Position:  Facilities Assistant

Reports to: Administrator

Job description:

  • Facility cleanliness and general organization.
  • Liaises with administrator & security guards regarding security of the premises/facility.
  • Run office errands.
  • Conduct other assignments as instructed by study leadership.
