In 2007, Makerere University, through the Makerere University School of Public Health, MakSPH, developed a training programme leading to the award of a Master of Health Services Research (MHSR) to address some of the challenges faced currently by.• the health care systems in Uganda and beyond. The program is designed for individuals who desire postgraduate training in public health research. Developed by experts from the MakSPH, in collaboration with the School of Medicine, Division of Health Services Research; Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, Health services research (HSR) is a multidisciplinary field of scientific investigation that studies how social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviors affect access to health care, the quality and cost of health care, and ultimately our health and well being. Its research domains are individuals:, families, organizations, institutions, communities, and populations.

The Program Goal

The general purpose of this programme is to produce practically oriented graduates capable of providing leadership for improved planning and delivery of health services in the most effective and efficient manner.

Specific Objectives of the MHSR Program are to:

Equip students with skills/knowledge and practical ability to identify health service delivery problems, conceptualize a research strategy and

analyze the problem identified.

Equip students with skills to measure and evaluate health service delivery problems such as: access to health care, cost of health care, cost-effectiveness, equity and quality of health care, and produce evidence-based solutions.

Provide students with the skills to utilize evidence from health services research to design and propose interventions at project, programme and organizational levels.

Disseminate evidence-based information for policy development and health care practice.

Equip students with competencies in monitoring and evaluation of health services.

Who Can Apply?

The programme is open to Ugandans and Non ­ Ugandans who fulfill the admission requirements. The requirements described below are only the minimum academic conditions for admission and only make one eligible for consideration. Only graduates from universities recognized by the National Council for Higher Education will be considered for admission to the MHSR training programme. All applicants must satisfy Makerere University admission requirements for graduate programmes.

Admission Requirements

A candidate is eligible for admission if he/she satisfies any of the following:

A degree in the health sciences; e.g. , medicine (human and veterinary), nursing , pharmacy, dentistry, and at least two years’ relevant field experience in the health sector, OR

A degree in social sciences; e. g., social work , sociology, economics, demography and at least two years’ relevant field experience in the health sector, OR

A degree in biological sciences; e. g., statistics, environmental sciences, biology, or laboratory sciences and at least two years’ relevant field experience in the health sector.

Facilities available for MHSR Students:

  • MakSPH is located within the Mulago Hospital Complex.
  • The school has classrooms, seminar rooms, a well equipped computer lab with access to the internet and a resource center stocked with textbooks, scientific journals and other reading materials relevant to public health and research.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees are: Ug. Shs. 5.0 m/= per year for Ugandans, or US $5000 per year for foreign students.
Makerere University reserves the right to revise tuition fee rates whenever necessary.
In addition to the tuition fees, students also meet all other expenses related to: registration fees to the university,

examination fees, travel and accommodation while in Kampala, stationery, books, and expenses related to Master’s research projects and the dissertation. Possession of a personal computer is strongly recommended. It is estimated that over the 2 years’ training program, these additional costs, excluding tuition fees, may total up to Ug. Shs. 5.0m/= or US $3000.
It is the responsibility of each intending applicant to identify funding sources to cover these expenses. This is a full time program and students should not expect to continue working while attending the program.
